Lake Constance and its places with viewpoints part 2

Hafen Meersburg

After a good night's sleep, we're on to Meersburg drove to see a few sights. Again we have a parking space that is at the top and you have to walk from the top to the bottom. As in Überlingen too. 🙂

Part 1 of our Lake Constance tour can be found here.

Meersburg

Meersburg is a really beautiful city. The upper town and the lower town, in the center, still largely consist of old buildings and are criss-crossed with narrow streets. There are still remains of the city wall, one Museum castle with castle garden and an old castle, the Meersburg. From the castle garden you have a wonderful view over Lake Constance to Konstanz and the island of Mainau on the right side and the Swiss mountains in the background on the left.

The Meersburg separates the upper town from the lower town and is the oldest inhabited castle in Germany. Meersburg was first mentioned in a document in the middle of the 11th century, and the oldest surviving structural elements probably come from this time. The famous poet lived in the middle of the 19th century Annette von Droste-Hülshoff here and died after a few years in the castle. The castle can be visited. There are also several events here, often on the weekends, such as medieval markets or life like in the Middle Ages.

Meersburg also has a ferry port where you can drive over to Konstanz. Round trips and ships to the flower island of Mainau also depart here. If you follow the promenade, you come to the harbor entrance for sailing boats.

Here at the end it says magic pillar of Peter Lenk. It shows some satirical portraits of personalities from the city's history, including Annette von Droste-Hülshoff in the form of a seagull.

The next day was a rainy day that we spent working on our homepage.

Friedrichshafen

After we slept in, we went to Friedrichshafen made. Since we just wanted to see the city a bit, we put ourselves in a normal parking lot. However, we didn’t pay much attention to where we were because there were already several mobile homes. Well, when we got back we had a ticket on the windshield. Our first, but probably not our last.

Panoramaturm Friedrichshafen

From this parking lot you can get directly to the port. Here ferries go over to Switzerland or passenger ships to Konstanz, Immenstaad or Mainau. At the end of the harbor entrance is the Moleturm, a lookout tower that can be climbed and has a beautiful wide view over the lake.

Next to the Uferppromenade long one comes on City garden as well as on Zeppelin House over to the Lock bridge. This is not accessible, but you can take nice photos from the shore. On the way there is a work of art on the promenade that Sound ship, half in the water. It is made of wood and metal and is called "At the moment". It was created during the war in Yugoslavia and was driven across the Danube to Sarajevo, where it stood for a short time. Now it has found its home port in Friedrichshafen.

There is also another Zeppelin Museum right on the promenade. In Friedrichshafen, Count von Zeppelin is remembered again and again. Graf von Zeppelin relocated the production of the aviation ships to Friedrichshafen at the beginning of the 20th century. After losing airships in a thunderstorm, he had to rely on donations to pursue his dream. He converted these donations into a foundation that was tied to the conditions for building airships. If these can no longer be fulfilled, the foundation should be transferred to the city of Friedrichshafen and used for charitable purposes. After the Second World War, zeppelins were no longer allowed to be built and since then the foundation has supported social and cultural commitment in Friedrichshafen.

After a short stroll through the city and a small snack, we drove on to Lindau.

Approaching storm in Friedrichshafen. So we fled to the city for a stroll. 🙂

Lindau island

We got ready and are on our way to Lindau island. We have a distance of 2 km and a walk of about 20 minutes in front of us. From the bridge that goes towards Lindau, you have a very nice view of the last end of the Lake Constance and Austria. Today we have beautiful panoramas again. It is cloudy and the sun only manages to send its rays through the clouds in between, but that is exactly what the panoramas do.

Insel Lindau
Bridge island Lindau

The plan is to circle the island on the shore to the east side and through the Old town to run back. Lindau has a really big sailing port. Fat carp also swim in the dock of the shipyard. At the port they have a separate pool as an outdoor pool, which has not yet opened, but is being prepared for opening.

At the port entrance there is a lighthouse on the west side and opposite it sits the Bavarian lion on the east side, which has been standing there since 1856. A great Lookout point at the lighthouse, from which you can see the mountains with their white snow peaks in Switzerland incredibly beautiful.

Through the Garden showwhich only started in Lindau in 2021 is supposed to take place, a lot is cordoned off again here, too, where you can't get along. Half of the island cannot be walked on the shore because of fences for the garden show. You are properly building and preparing here.

We are sitting at the Sternschanze, another vantage point, and take our lunch break. The water rushes super loud and has an incredible number of small waves with white foam crowns that you feel as if you are sitting by the sea. A lot of little sparrows arrived at the bread break. We threw down a few crusts of bread and they flew away with it. Sometimes they were so trusting that they came to your feet and ate the crust of the bread out of your hand.

The Thief storm We also saw the city of Lindau and from there we went to the Lindau old town ran. The Lindauer Gassen look really great, one house next to the other, old buildings in between, narrow and high.

The pedestrian zone has many houses from the 16th and 17th centuries that are well preserved. At the old market square you have a look at that old City Hallwhich spreads a medieval charm with its paintings and the old staircase.

additional Information about Lindau can be found on the homepage.

After a little more than 3 hours and about 9 km of walking, we are back at our bus. Finja is totally slain and just manages to get to the bus and then throws herself to sleep. Then she only got up when there was food. I love the mountains. When I see the mountains my heart opens up. That is why Sebastian had to take a lot of photos with mountain backgrounds from Lindau. And he does me the favor of spending the night on the way to Marktredwitz, in the Allgäu. The trip itself was fantastic with the mountains in the background. Let's see what the mountain world looks like at the overnight place.

Lake Constance conclusion

Lake Constance is just great! There is so much to see and not just 1 week is enough. We will come back. But since it is a touristically overcrowded area, you can sometimes see it in the prices. We paid more for the seats than usual and apart from supplies such as waste disposal there was nothing else.

Ok, we knew it could be like that. And since we cannot take bicycles with us, we are dependent on nearby places. Yes, and what can I say, of course we didn't manage to swim in the lake. When the weather was right, it was too crowded. And on the other days the weather wasn't right. But we both enjoyed the week. We'll definitely be back to watch the Swiss side!
