Denmark part 5 – from Römö to Flensburg

Wolkenhimmel

The open air museum Den Gamle By in Aarhus was really a great experience. Actually, we would have liked to stay there longer, but it was already late and we were hungry to the bones. The place was really a district of its own right in the middle of the big city. And is definitely worth a visit for everyone. It's amazing that even for us it was a trip down memory lane. We also recognized many things from the 20th century and had to laugh about a few things. This is how we notice how time is changing and modernizing. Maybe we will come to Aarhus again, because we didn't see anything of the actual city.

Romo Island – the nearest car beach

From Ribe it followed Romo. Before we drove onto the dam to Romo, we stopped at a parking lot at the dam and looked at a viewpoint. There was a path leading to the dunes and on this path were 2 small hills where stone stairs led up. Arrived on the dam you had a nice view of the island and its access road as well as over the 2 sea basins. It was low tide so didn't see much of the sea.

Back at the bus we took a lunch break and then drove over the dam to Romo. We wanted a pitch, a warm shower in our heads. There is a really large parking space, which is also relatively new. Since many tourists want to drive their cars onto the beach, they have a great solution here on the square. You look for a seat that is still free, pay and flip a sign on the seat from green (free) to red (occupied) so that everyone can see that it is occupied. Then you can drive relaxed to the beach and come back late. After we have chosen a place, we go directly to the beach.

We spent the afternoon on the beach, the sea just a few meters away from us. It was just beautiful, pure sun, no wind and almost 20° warm. We sat outside, enjoyed the weather, ran and watched the sunset. It is forbidden to stay overnight on the car beaches, you have to leave them by 9 p.m. Since we still wanted to cook dinner, we drove back to the campsite after sunset. It was late by the time we had finished eating and decided that we would take a shower in the morning. Well, we should have left right away.

On the last lap with Finja, we walked past the medical supply stores and then saw that there were probably problems with the water and that one should shower in the evening or only on Sunday afternoon. Then someone would come on Monday. Ok, stupid for us, because that's the only reason we drove to the parking space.

Then we have to use our outdoor shower at the next place. Since we have to leave the site by 12 noon the next day and many people check out in the morning, we got up a little earlier. We drank coffee in peace and made supply and disposal. Then Basti went to pay and there was already a small queue in front of the machine. Our goal is again on the Baltic Sea, where we have chosen a place opposite the Geltinger Bay. On the way to the Baltic Sea we went to a highlight on Römö. There is a fence made out of whale jawbones. This is the first fence of this kind on our trip so far and will probably be one of the last.

Ballebro - Overnight accommodation by the sea next to the ferry terminal

On the way to the selected parking space, we actually wanted to see a castle ruin. But the parking lot was quite small and full, so we drove on. The parking lot at the Baltic Sea was half in the forest and we didn't like it that much. We ran another round and were surprised at how many trees were in the water. It is a nature reserve and so the trees stay where they are. There was a lot going on, many were running here with their dogs. Back on the bus we chose a new seat.

After about half an hour we arrived at the other place. Here we were standing right by the water on the meadow, by the Alsfjord. A few meters further there was a ferry that translates to the island "Als". There were signs with no camping, but we only want to stay overnight. If we are not sent away we plan to spend 2 nights here. You have a great view over the fjord to the island and the weather was great too with a beautiful sunset. The ferry ran regularly, so there was a bit more traffic on the road.

The 2 nights we slept well, even slept well. We didn't do that much during the day, we walked, talked on the phone and talked a lot with Finja. The weather was again pleasant with sun, a bit fresh. I then cooked and pureed meat for Finja. So had a relaxing day. In the evening I sorted the laundry because we want to go to Flensburg the next day and I have to do the washing. I just hope the laundry gets dry too, otherwise we have no way of drying it.

Flensburg and Geltinger Bucht - stroll through town and family visit

The next day we drove to Flensburg on the country road because it wasn't that far away. But there was no border control here either and we could just drive over there. There is such a "hoopla" about vaccination or non-vaccination and test or no test and then nobody is there to check. On the Danish side, who picked up everything, was checked upon entry…. funny. Well, we went to do the laundry first, which took a while. And fortunately, the laundry also got really dry in the dryer, so I didn't have to hang up quite as much.

Since Basti's parents are currently at the campsite in Geltinger Bucht, we wanted to meet them in Flensburg the next day and go for a stroll. Basti and I both need new barefoot shoes and we always got them in Flensburg. So we drove to Flensburg for the night to a large parking lot at a shopping center where you can stand for free. The next morning we phoned the parents and wanted to meet them in Flensburg Mitte. But the two didn't feel like it, so Basti and I went to town alone.

We agreed with them that we would come to the pitch for a few days afterwards. In the shoe shop we were then held up by nice conversations with the employee and a customer. We were so deep in conversation that we forgot the time and had to call the parents because we were late. But the talks were so great and did us a lot of good. At the parents' place, there was "Mamaessen" which we always look forward to!! We stayed 3 nights and enjoyed the time together, talked a lot and cooked together.

After these 3 days we went home with an overnight stay in Bramsche.
