Estonia Part 1 - from Reiu to Saaremaa

Sonnenuntergang am Lost Place Leuchtturm

The border crossing was a bit bigger this time, but nobody to be seen here either. The streets in Estonia are striking. So good and almost without potholes, except of course the gravel roads. But there are very few of them. Incredible, the roads are better than in Germany. Let's go to the islands of Muhu and Saaremaa.

Reiu

When we arrived in Estonia, we wanted to stand by the sea with a fireplace. But then we ran straight away, because mosquitoes came up to us immediately. The whole side of the lake was covered with reeds and we have already seen that there are a lot of mosquitoes there. A little further, in Reiu, we drove to a parking lot, which was also right by the sea and near an amusement park. From the windshield we were able to look directly at the sea.

It was pretty warm that day and we were all sweaty. So it was my first time in the sea. After a short period of acclimatization, the water was also quite warm. However, if you want to swim really well, you have to walk very far. Since Poland we have noticed that the water is very shallow and people walk very far out. I'm out so far that I was up to my neck in the water on my knees. At least that way I could swim a little.

The space is also used well by residents who come to swim and then grill at the fireplace. Here we stood with six or seven mobile homes and had a good night. The car park even has several toilets, fresh water and a changing room.

Muhu Island 1.0 - has nothing to do with cows

On the way to the island of Muhu, where you take the ferry to Saaremaa, we took the coastal road and looked at a lot. First we wanted each other Parnu but unfortunately we couldn't find a proper parking space after turning a bit. So we drove on towards Töstamaa.

Our next stop was the port of Munalaiu. Here you stand on the pier and look directly at the islands Manilaid and Kihnu. You can even take a ferry across to these islands. It's really windy and stormy at the harbor. Our car is shaken well and the sea has a lot of white whitecaps.

It was very stormy! 😀

In a suburb of the port city Virtsu we stopped again and looked at an old barn and an old city gate with city wall. When we arrive at the port of Virtsu, we have to wait about 40 minutes before we get on the ferry. The drive to Muhu then took 20 minutes.

On the way to Saaremaa, we first spent one night on Muhu. In which Muhu Museum, Open-air museum, we stood in the parking lot. Later our dear friend joined us and we walked down to the small harbor together. We took a few more pictures there and then had a good night.

The largest island in Estonia - Saaremaa

The next day we went to it Saaremaa drove on. The weather was a bit mixed, sometimes a few drops came down, then the sun was shining again. But it was also a bit windy and fresh, which was very pleasant. On our way to our first stop, we saw a church in the middle of the forest. We stopped there and took a few photos.

A few hundred meters further was our first stop, a huge stone, the hammer. Almost twice as high as Sebastian. Our next stop was another stone that is painted and serves as a memorial stone for the indigenous people of Saaremaa. It is located directly on a Frisbee golf course. Funny, we've only seen it the 2nd time. Then there are metal baskets set up at a certain distance and you have to hit them with the Frisbee. After a short lunch break for all of us, we drove on to the next lookout point.

In Potash we have arrived the Meteorite crater watched. There are a total of eight craters here. Several smaller ones and one large one. We took a look at the big one and walked around him once. The water in the crater is about a hundred meters deep, but you can see a stone or a piece of wood lying in the middle. The crater was very impressive, how big it was!

Kratersee in Kali

It went on after Cureitsaare, where we wanted to spend the night. We have parked ourselves in a public parking lot right by the castle. The sea and the small beach are also not far away. So we first went for a run, looked at the beach and walked to a café outside the castle. After a cup of coffee for both of us, which we drank super quickly because of mosquitoes, we continued to walk to the castle. Today it is really stormy, the wind is incredible. The clouds just fly by in the sky.

The castle with its moat all around is very impressive and can also be visited, but again without a dog. But the castle courtyard and the meadows a little above can be visited freely, as you can also walk through from the city side to the beach side. There is even a mill on the west side. The area of the castle complex is really big, super well laid out and super well maintained.

Kuressaare Castle

In the evening our friend came and then we ran into town for something to eat. The houses looked really great as they are made entirely of wood. The “inner city” consists almost entirely of restaurants and small souvenir shops. In the square is a fountain embedded in the ground, which sprays fountains upwards and is illuminated in different colors.

After dinner we walked down to the harbor, where there was a large bronze figure “Suur Toell ja Piret”. It depicts a giant with his wife, who are carrying a boat full of fish in their midst. The "legend" says that they were very friendly giants and helped the residents from starvation.

On the way back it was sunset and the atmosphere in the sky was breathtaking. We women ran to the car and Basti to the castle again. He then took great photos from above, until thunderclouds came and he only got on the bus dry because he ran.

After the night in Kuressaare was filled with thunderstorms and heavy rain, we had a nice day this morning. We worked until 2:00 p.m. and then went to the lighthouse in Sorve made. It's super stormy and your hair is just flying around your ears. We ran forward to the headland and saw the water lash against each other. Sebastian then went up to the lighthouse, 250 steps up, and took pictures from above.

About 8 km further on, we stopped at a stone beach, where people have put up various stone towers. It's amazing how many turrets were built. Then we drove to an old little lighthouse. It's stormy, but we'll wait and see if we'll spend the night here. From our car you can see the sea directly. It's amazing to watch the weather here at the lighthouse. Left and right thick, fat rain clouds and even violent thunderstorms passed us and we were spared. It was incredibly impressive to watch this weather spectacle.

One thunderstorm chases the next

The sunset with the clouds was just a dream. To see the moon in the slightly orange sky is just as super beautiful. Most importantly, the moon had barely risen, the sun went down and 15 minutes later the moon went down again. Sebastian still tried to take photos of the passing thunderstorm. Unfortunately it was so stormy that it didn't work out so well. Let's see how we get through the night, because the thunderstorms shook the car around a lot.

After we emptied our toilet, we are along the coast to the Vilsandi National Park hazards. We wanted to run a little there and see how the weather played along. 1 hour away there is probably a lighthouse that we wanted to go to. The walk did not last long as it started to rain. Our backpacks were already completely wet.

It went on to Panga to Panga cliffwhere we actually wanted to spend the night. From above you had a wonderful view over the sea and diagonally down to the cliff. There must be stones or bumps in a semicircle in front of the cliff, as the water has broken and made waves. Unfortunately, you couldn't come from top to bottom to really look at the cliff and the rock structure. The parking lot itself wasn't that great either, so we drove on.

The bus stops are a special highlight of the island. These are not only covered, but can usually be found as small houses. Some on our way had a mailbox, some were adorned with flowers and even had bookshelves filled with boredom.

The windmill park was still on our list. On the way there we did some shopping in Leisi. When we arrived at the windmill park, we weren't particularly impressed and didn't go in because it was pouring out of buckets even after it started. On the way we thought we could stay here but it was only day parking. After a short thought, we drove back to the island of Muhu and stayed there again at the open-air museum.

You can see more pictures in the Estonia photo gallery look at.
