Norway part 15 - from Ausevika to Stegastein

Wunderbare Aussicht am Rastplatz Richtung Stegastein

Seeing the glaciers was kind of impressive. You didn't have to walk or drive far. The huge ice masses that reach almost to the sea line down the mountain, unbelievable. in the Jostedalsbreen National Park the glacier is gigantic and what we got to see are just processes from the big one. The lake looked just amazing with its turquoise water. Even before that, the rivers or lakes were always nice to look at.

But this impression is a little clouded by the story behind it. If you know that the turquoise the water, the more rock dust there is in it. And that in turn means that the glacier gives off a lot of meltwater. So it gets smaller faster. The fact that the Briksdals Glacier has decreased to a fifth in 16 years made us sad and to think about.

Ausevika - historical place to stay

Our way led us between the mountains back towards the fjord. We looked for several pitches but it wasn't that easy. The route was super nice, past lakes and mountains. However, there was no way to stand anywhere for the night. Either it was private property or the place wasn't suitable for us. How annoyed we were, constantly looking for a new opportunity. Then Basti has something in that Eikefjord found. A parking lot in a historic location.

So drive another three quarters of an hour and then we were in Ausevika, but it was already dark. We stood there, ate something and ran a little lap with Finja. We slept very well that night and stood there alone, with the exception of one car. The next morning the sky was overcast, but dry and so we walked to the rock carvings. Unlike in Sweden, they were really easy to see here. It's impressive when you can still see the drawings so closely.

Here is some information: The drawings come from the Stone Age and are around 6,000 years old. There are around 350 figures: people, animals, spirals, mazes. There are also fertility symbols and agricultural motifs, the so-called Weidemannskunst. They come from hunters and gatherers and they were convinced that everything in the world has a soul - people, animals, plants, stones, water and wind.

The drawings gave her the opportunity to come into contact with other powers. In addition, only important people were allowed to make these drawings. Only a small part of the area has been exposed. You are still in the process of processing the other rocks with conservation.

Since the weather is inconsistent and it rains every now and then, we thought about where to go. We then decided to drive slowly down the coast to Bergen.

Bergen - didn't really convince us as a city

We then made our way along the coast towards Bergen. In Förde we were still shopping and then drove on. Since it rained every now and then, it wasn't that special to drive on the coast. Shortly before Bergen we stopped for the night in a small forest parking lot. Here you could run quite well with Finja.

There was a small playground and a barbecue hut if you walked the small path towards the sea. Since it also rained the next day, we stayed a second night and did a little bit of work on the homepage. We haven't done that much in the last few weeks and so a lot went together.

The next day didn't start so well. We had a heated discussion about standing somewhere for a few days to process the reports for the homepage. That wasn't so nice, but it was also normal when you're together in such a small space all the time. Around noon the sky tore open and the sun came out. So we are then after Mountains driven. I broke a pair of pants and needed new ones. We didn't really like the city itself. To find a suitable store, we walked halfway through the city.

It took another hour until I found a suitable one. We took a few more photos at the port and when we got back to the bus it was quite late. Basti was annoyed beforehand because the big city had annoyed him.

Because of his mood, I was of course not in a particularly good mood and then the search for a pair of pants gave me the rest. So we were both in a bad mood and we noticed that we don't like the big cities. It wasn't our day. It was already 6:30 p.m. when we drove out of Bergen.

On the way to our overnight place we stopped at a supermarket because we no longer wanted to cook big. We also added water. And I still had to cook soup for Finja, which always takes so long. The place to stay wasn't exactly the best, but it was feasible for one night. It was right next to a street and behind a tunnel. So loud.

After I finished the soup, I was annoyed again because everything was lying around in the bus. Well, there are days like that, but they are rare with us. Contrary to our expectations, we slept quite well that night, even though we were standing on a main road. After I cooked some meat for Finja, as it was still too late for that in the evening, we drove on around noon.

Björgavegen pass road by the Aurlandsfjord - overnight stay with a wide view

We are on our way direction Stegastein and Aurlandsfjord did. You can now tell that autumn has arrived. Our way led past fjords and between the mountains and the trees got a really colorful dress. Since it was fairly calm, you could see a lot of reflections in the water, which looked just great. We then took a lunch break at a rest area and ate outside. The way to the Stegastein viewpoint above the Aurlandsfjord led us through many tunnels, some of which were colorfully illuminated. So you really can do that, Tunnel.

To get to the lookout point, we had to drive serpentines again, which were not that wide at all. Sometimes you had passages as a single road with no alternative. I was just glad that nobody came towards me. Once at the top we had a very nice view over the fjord. The parking lot itself was quite small and narrow for this vantage point and I don't want to know how things are here in the high season.

We had just got a parking space. Since the weather played along, we're still the ones Björgavegen pass road moved up further. Normally we would have gone back and then headed towards the circular tunnel. But as is so often the case in recent times, our plans change spontaneously.

I love mountains, the drive up and the view all around and down. Then to see water is just gigantic. The route up was really great. When thinking about where to stay overnight, we found a place at the top of the pass road. And since the weather cooperates, we risked having to turn on the heating a bit.

When we were there, it was really a dream. You could see very far and the play between sun and clouds was nice to see. We were surprised that it was so warm up here and that there was no wind. We hoped that it would stay that way through the night because we couldn't stand sheltered from the wind.

The next day we wanted to drive the pass road to the end and then back down towards the longest tunnel. We slept very well that night and it was nice to have a coffee with a view over the mountains. For a second night up here, which Basti then offered me, it was too cold for me. And the weather should get worse again.
