Norway part 3 - from Alta to the northern lights on Senja

Polarlicht über den Bergen

From the ferry down we had a wonderful view of the first few kilometers Seiland. But we are now looking forward to the onward journey and the 2 from @pietstraumreise, with whom we will travel together for the near future.

Alta - a strenuous hike to the canyon

The way to Alta took about two and a half hours and ran more or less through a tundra landscape. Right and left there were only moss meadows and mud as far as the eye could see with small hills. In terms of landscape, I didn't find it so appealing, but it belongs to Norway just like everything else. When we arrived in Alta, we were standing at an altitude of 470 m and the area was really bare. I didn't spend the night so well, it was the first night on the bus again and had to turn on the gas heater in the early morning because I was so cold. That was the first time we had to turn on the heater to sleep.

After we had breakfast, we started the hike to the waterfall and Canyon. In total it would be 11km to walk. The weather was cool, but the sun kept coming through. The waterfall was really great. He also kept a lot of water. There were then many photos of Basti. The further way towards the canyon was again a stony and muddy path. Sometimes it was laid out with wooden planks so that you could get over the mud. At the streams you had to get over stones to the other side, which was not that easy with Finja.

About two and a half kilometers before we got to the canyon, I ran back with Finja because I had problems with my hip. We are no longer used to walking in hiking boots and then even stony paths where we lose our grip and feeling because of the firm sole. I definitely wouldn't have made it to the canyon. The other three then walked through to the canyon and it must have been a very nice view. The way back to the bus was really difficult because Finja had problems with her "herd" having separated. She kept stopping and wanted to go back. It was only after the waterfall that she understood and continued walking normally. However, it took me more time than on the way there.

When I arrived at the bus, my shoes flew off my feet and it was a relief to put on my barefoot shoes. Then I wrote blog articles and waited for the others.

They were back at around 4:30 p.m. and after a short break we drove to the next night spot. About 60 km away we got a nice parking space on a lake framed by mountains. We all started the next day comfortably. The weather shouldn't be so nice and we have agreed that we will do a day's driving towards Tromso and look for a place for the night halfway through. Before that, we still had to go shopping and do services.

Olderdalen - an interesting place to sleep

The landscape is now changing more and more. Now there are bigger mountains with snow on top and you can also see that there is fresh snow on the tops, like powdered sugar. You can clearly see from the temperatures that autumn is coming. When we arrive at the sleeping place, we have a great view over the fjord and the surrounding mountains, simply fantastic. The weather wasn't so great later, it rained and increasingly winded. We then spent a cozy evening in our bus for four, ate and chatted. On the last lap with Finja, Basti and I noticed that there is an old bunker system here, which, however, could only be seen with a flashlight.

The next day was initially a little rainy, then the sun came out and my husband took photos of the area. The place was really well located for a great mountain panorama. There were also various hiking trails around the square, including the old bunker. For each part of the bunker there were signs explaining what the function was. You're an abandoned Cold War NATO base.

Senja - the island with our first northern lights

The way to Senja was very rainy. So we did the route again. Our stopover was then Malselvfossen, a wide waterfall that was super loud. After a small lunch snack, we walked to the waterfall and took a photo of it. Of course, the men needed their time to be able to take beautiful pictures. Since the day was already broken for us because of the driving, we decided after a brief consideration to continue our way to Senja, where we want to spend the next few days. Since it is an island and the food is more expensive there, we went to the supermarket.

We girls were pretty tired after shopping and we agreed that we definitely won't be doing it for long. Well, we didn't know what was coming. The sleeping place was in the yacht and fishing port directly after the bridge and we had a wide view of the fjord and the surrounding area. While eating, the 2 men were always looking to see when and if there was a chance to see the northern lights. And that possibility increased by the hour. We all got excited and then the clouds slowly cleared. After Sebastian and Jan had been outside with the cameras for half an hour, the first northern lights came.

It's just unbelievable what is going on in the sky. Since we were standing in the harbor and there were lights from houses on both sides, they could not be seen as a green cloud with the naked eye. But you saw a thin, light veil that moved faster than the clouds and looked a little different in color. After about an hour there was a real spectacle in the sky and the veils danced. You could see that really well with the eyes, as well as small prismatic formations at the edges. What an experience. The first night on Senja, September 1st and for all of us the first time northern lights. We were blown away. Especially since the time for the northern lights is just beginning and we will still be spending so much time in Norway.

In order to have less light for photos for the next 2 nights, as the weather should get better, we drove to another place. On the way we stopped in a harbor where we could take a shower for a small fee. Basti had previously had problems with his laptop and his mood was not in a good mood. If he didn't get the problem solved, he'd have to reinstall the PC, which of course wouldn't be great because of all of our data. Luckily, when I got back from the shower, he had fixed the bug and his mood got better too. After he had showered, we were able to drive on relaxed.
