Sweden part 1 - from Flensburg to Kristianstad

Fels in der Brandung

Our journey continues! After a long back and forth we decided to continue our tour. We got information about the borders and the corona conditions in the north and we decided to go to Sweden first. Before that, I stayed with the family in Celle for a few days and then headed for Flensburg. The feeling of finally driving off again was simply indescribable!

Flensburg to Böste Läge - borderline experiences and a small beach car park for overnight stays

In Flensburg, we stayed at a shopping center on the parking lot, which has specially designated spaces for mobile homes and supplies and disposal is possible. The next day should be a driving day. We planned to spend our night in Sweden in the evening. So I did a COVID test in the morning, which was also negative. We knew that you need a negative test no longer than 24 hours old for Denmark and a maximum of 48 hours old for Sweden. It was clear to us that we would drive through so that we wouldn't have to do another test.

After we received the certificate of the test, we drove to the Danish border. Everything went great here and the customs officer was super nice; also made fun of Sebastian's hair length, as it is much shorter in the passport photo. We hoped that when we got to Denmark we would also come to Sweden. So on through Denmark and over the bridges to Sweden. The drive until shortly before the end of the 2nd bridge was stress-free. Then came the traffic jam.

When leaving the Oresund Bridge, you drive through the toll stations and the traffic jam started well in advance. But not because of the payment. Behind every toll terminal there was a customs terminal and every car was checked here. Passport control, pet ID and especially the negative test certificate were carefully examined. After 10 minutes we were able to continue and we were finally in Sweden.

It has come true, we have our destination Sweden reached. What a feeling, you can't quite believe it even after a few days. Now we can take our time and explore the country comfortably. Our first place to stay is just after Trelleborg in Böste Läge. There is a large parking lot right on the beach and is used a lot by the mobile homes who come by ferry or go back. The first time back to the beach, just great. Since it was later and it was raining, we didn't go to the beach until the next day. What we noticed immediately, there are an incredible number of swans in the water near the coast.

From the parking lot you can do some hikes. Since we have to start slowly with Finja and can't walk that many kilometers yet, we only went for a walk on the beach.

Kåseberga - a remarkable historical site

May 1st is also a public holiday here in Sweden. The supermarkets are open every 7 days a week, but everything else was then closed. Actually, we had planned on the way to Kåseberga southernmost mainland point in Sweden to look at. It's just a landmark, but it would have been nice anyway. But due to the holiday, the parking lot was overcrowded and we didn't have any cash for the parking machines. So the way led us to Ystad to pull money there.

We went on to our next lookout point. We had checked beforehand whether it would be possible to spend the night there and found a parking space nearby. This was a former sports field with a shower and toilet. We looked forward to the shower. When it arrived the place was quite full. We had the feeling that half of Sweden was traveling with their mobile homes. Since the weather was nice and we were at the place early, we are still to the lookout point Ales stenar ran.

The ship settlement or also called the Swedish Stonehenge

An incredibly impressive building awaited us. Ales Stenar, which is a 1,400 year old Ship settlement is, will also be Swedish Stonehenge called. It is 67 meters long and 19 meters wide and consists of 59 large stones. In addition, it is high on a hill directly on the coast and you have a wide view over the sea. What it should mean, however, is controversial. On the one hand, they say it is a Solar calendar. If you consider that the bow of the ship shows the sunset at the summer solstice and the stern shows the sunrise at the winter solstice, you can well believe that. The position of the sun is shown precisely on a display board so that the other stones represent a few months.

The scientific side rejects this, however. Finds from an archaeological dig are more likely to indicate one Grave site down. The display boards also speak of a landmark for seafarers. No matter what it ends up being, it's just an incredible work.

On the way back to the square we walked across the harbor. A really cute place that is quite crowded in the high season. Back we took a shower first. With the full space and only one shower, it was really nice and clean. We actually wanted to do some work, but our WiFi didn't work. So only Sebastian worked to get it going again.

Stenshuvud National Park and overnight behind the dunes

The next day it was time to run. So let's go to the national park. The Stenshuvud National Park is located directly on the coast and offers various circular routes from easy to difficult. We wanted to take a route with a duration of 40 to 60 minutes, but then saw the no-dogs sign at the entrance. Since there was nothing in English, we just walked the small circular route. This led down through a small piece of forest to the beach and back over a small moor area. Next to the paths, the ground was full of small white flowers and wild garlic everywhere. But national park, nothing with picking. On the beach we enjoyed the sound of the sea and Finja the sun.

Back at the exit hut we found a flyer, even in German. If we had checked beforehand. It says that dogs are to be kept on a leash, but there is no mention of a ban. It's a shame, now it was too late for us to start again.

A little further up the coast we then stood in a beach parking lot behind the small dunes and stayed the night. Sung to sleep by the sound of the sea, wonderful. There were 4 other mobile homes with us. In the morning someone was gone again or they drove while we had coffee. I have to say that we sleep longer and we almost always feel this way when several people are around. It is a bit difficult for us to coordinate in the morning at camping sites or pitches with departure times. At the moment we just enjoy that we have time and can take it easy.

Kristianstad - Overnight at the bird sanctuary

We have to fill up, shop and fill up with fresh water. Since our next point is supposed to be Åhus, we found everything there. So first of all everything important done before we wanted to go into town. When Basti came back from shopping, it started raining and hailing properly. With the weather we didn't want to stroll through the city, of course. After a short consideration and with the help of a parking space app, we found a nice place to stay. At a bird sanctuary, which at a lake near Kristianstad lies.

Sumpflandschaft ein Vogelparadies

Since the weather should stay that way for the next few days, we decided to spend 3 nights there, if no one “chases us away”. Except for a few ornithologists, it was super quiet for the 3 days. Between the downpours we went running with Finja and were amazed at how “loud” the birds can be. Often, however, they were only heard, but could not be made out in the large meadows. Basti then tried to photograph her in flight.

We used the days to sleep in, work and do something on the bus. We quickly got used to the rhythm and the way the bus went. We also looked for the next contact points for Sweden. Since the problem last year was that you weren't allowed to and from Sweden to the neighboring countries, we didn't score any points. Let's catch up on everything now.
