Spain part 2 – from Palafolls to Salou

The drive to Spain was very exhausting, but we were all the happier to have arrived there. Finally some sun and a bit warmer weather. After a cool Scandinavian summer, we are looking forward to a warm southern winter and things are looking promising at the moment. The days on the pitch have done us quite well. We were able to recover from the driving and also work a bit. For the next few days we will be driving along the Costa Brava and we are very excited about the prospects.

Palafolls – Overnight stay at a ruined castle

Of Bellcaire d'Emporda we went first to Palamos for shopping. At first we thought about staying the night on a pitch by the sea. But it was beautiful, the sun was out and it was still early. So we drove along the coastal road on the Costa Brava. This was a bit elevated and you had a super nice view of the sea. The sky was bright blue and the temperature was 19 degrees, so we were actually outside in our T-shirts.

For the overnight app, we had selected several places along the coastal road. But when we drove along there, they turned out to be very unsuitable. However, there were a lot of vantage points along the road, most of which we drove to and took pictures of. What a beautiful sight!! We were really excited about the track. Too bad only with the overnight places. How nice it would have been to wake up in the morning and have such a view.

The parking lot at the fort in Palafolls up on a small mountain then agreed with us. The road up there took some getting used to, potholes and the last stretch was pretty steep. The parking lot was against a small wall and you could see over the city of Palafolls to the sea, just gorgeous. In the back then lay the ruins and by the evening we realized that they were well frequented and that the street was being used as a thoroughfare.

When we got there it was almost sunset and the first thing we did was look at the ruins and take photos. It is also locked overnight, which surprised us a lot. But it was also very well maintained and the main path was even suitable for disabled people; and all for free. After the tour we ate and started the evening. Despite some traffic and pedestrians, we spent a quiet night.

The next day I cooked the meat for Finja for 1 week. After that we ran in the forest below the wall and took some pictures from a different perspective. Then we continued towards Montserrat Monastery.

Monistrol de Montserrat - Overnight with views of the town

I really wanted that Monastery of Montserrat look at. Since we left late because of the meat cooking, we only drove to the place to stay below the monastery. On the way there we were able to fill up cheaply and Basti bought a little something. On the way we saw a lot of police doing checks. But they didn't check us. Since the monastery is on a mountain, we drove up serpentines to the overnight stay.

The parking lot was just off the road to the monastery and also had a few picnic tables and benches. The railway that goes up to the monastery passed below the parking lot. In the evening there wasn't so much traffic. Since we arrived later again, we had the sunset shortly afterwards. Unfortunately, it went under behind the mountain and so we couldn't see much of it. But we had a starry night and it was a full moon. We could see it rising from the rest areas over the other surrounding mountains. The city below us was also beautifully lit and easy to see.

We slept well that night, but there was a lot of traffic in the morning. Several coaches drove up to the monastery and the train below us. We could not see the monastery itself from this vantage point. We then wanted to drive to the parking lot of the monastery and had informed ourselves again on the internet to be on the safe side. That was a good thing, because they actually want a decent amount for parking. So we leave the monastery on the left and drive around the mountain and then back towards the coast.

Lost Place bei dem Kloster Monistrol de Montserrat

On the way up towards the monastery we saw a hotel ruin, Hotel Colonia Puig, right on the street and since there was a parking lot, we also stopped so that Basti could take some pictures of the Lost Place. He wasn't the only one walking around with a camera either. Basti wasn't doing so well with a headache and a slight sore throat, but he still picked up the camera. The trail around the mountain was nice to drive. You had beautiful views in between, but unfortunately all of them without stopping possibility.

At the bottom we drove back on the highway towards the coast and stopped at a rest area Tarragon stopped from which one could walk to an aqueduct. Since it was a motorway rest stop, we didn't want to leave the bus unattended, so I walked to the aqueduct alone with Finja. It was an impressive building and also very old. At the top of the water channel you can walk along the aqueduct to the other side. I took a few pictures and then we walked back to the bus.

Salou – almost ghostly promenade

In the overnight app we found a place that in Salou is right on the beach. We look forward to it, right on the beach and listening to the sound of the sea. When we got there, there were already several mobile homes, but we still found a place. It's in the built-up area, but since it's winter and the apartments and hotels are empty or closed, standing there doesn't bother anyone. We then walked a bit on the beach and on the promenade and it was nice and warm. We slept peacefully that night.

Basti still has a bit of a headache and so that he can rest, we stayed there a second night. I then wrote a bit of reports and enjoyed the sun. Next to us was a German from Heidelberg, with whom I had spoken the day before. The weather was great again and so Basti and I later walked along the promenade. Up to the shopping street, the promenade with the hotels and small, closed stalls seems like a ghost town.

Almost all of the hotels were near the beach, but they were all closed and even sealed with wrapping paper from the inside. The stalls on the promenade were all closed except for a small restaurant. It really felt like a ghostly place to us. Pedestrians came towards you, but you could count them on one hand. The idea of being here in the summer really made us shudder. We don't want to experience how crowded everything is then.

Palmen in Salou

We really enjoyed the 2 nights on the beach, the sound of the sea always in our ears. We hope to find many more such places and to be able to sleep there. Also seeing palm and olive trees in the crowds is just amazing. The next stop will be the Ebro Delta.
